i am going 36. i have been a pessimist my life, but i consider myself pragmatic. i dont see the urgency for beijing to adopt large scale changes to its power grip because that is the character of a totalitarian regime. i wouldn't expect much from it.
the greatest fear is that more and more people do not even care about democracy but only their own wellbeing, which is what i see the case in China.
a growing number of people in hk are going that direction. they prefer stability over change. and for hk to achieve stability, people will learn not to intimidate Beijing, or not to challenge the hk government's absolute obedience to Beijing. when the majority of people share that "wisdom", the drive for democracy will be truly dead.
my another fear is that people connect China with the ruling party. to love the country becomes obeying the communist party, and criticising the party means you are not patriotic. this is one reason why i will never vote for dab.
to me, China is no different from the emperor-rule system as in Qing or Ming dynasty, they only told the world to call it differently.

also, the mentality behind the songwriters of "the impossible dream" is commonly found in westerners, but it's seldom, or never found in Chinese history. we have all along just been calling or praying for a wise emperor for thousands of years, and this quest is still continuing.
as i said, take the current Beijing administration as an emperor-led regime would explain everything that has happened in PRC's 50 yr history.
dont get me wrong, i totally support what you do, and am totally pro-democracy myself. call me foolish, but we are chinese and chinese dont envy change unless the situation is really really unbearable. despite constant reporting of civil unrest, China is far from having a major makeover.
